Wood frog Lithobates sylvaticus tadpoles develop in temporary wetlands where high population densities can force tadpoles into aggregations that intensify competition and can lead to cannibalism. However, chemical alarm cues released from injured conspecifics could also dissuade cannibalism. The purpose of this study was to test mechanisms that may influence can- nibalistic behaviour. We tested whether the tendency of tadpoles to consume conspecifics would increase with the presence of competition and/or cues of profitable diets. Tadpoles placed in 1L experimental containers were tested for feeding initiation times of multiple diets, including conspecific tissues and conspecific tissues combined with chemical cues from the alternative diets (brine shrimp and comrneal). Tadpoles were tested in the presence and absence of a competitor, and at multiple times over the course of the study. Tadpoles exhibited an altered response to diets over time; however the presence of a competitor reduced re- sponse times to all diets including conspecific tissues. Similarly, the presence of specific diets also reduced the response time of tadpoles to conspecific tissues. These results suggest competition among feeding tadpoles could result in aggressive behaviour leading to indiscriminate predation and cannibalism [Current Zoology 60 (5): 571-580, 2014 ].

Social challenges from rival conspecifics are common in the lives of animals, and changes in an animal's social environment can influence physiology and behavior in ways that appear to be adaptive in the face of continued social instability (i.e. social priming). Recently, it has become clear that testosterone, long thought to be the primary mediator of these effects, may not always change in response to social challenges, an observation that highlights gaps in our understanding of the proximate me- chanisms by which animals respond to their social environment. Here, our goal is to address the degree to which testosterone me- diates organismal responses to social cues. To this end, we review the behavioral and physiological consequences of social chal- lenges, as well as their underlying hormonal and gene regulatory mechanisms. We also present a new case study from a wild songbird, the dark-eyed junco Junco hyemalis, in which we find largely divergent genome-wide transcriptional changes induced by social challenges and testosterone, respectively, in muscle and liver tissue. Our review underscores the diversity of mechani- sms that link the dynamic social environment with an organisms' genomic, hormonal, and behavioral state. This diversity among species, and even among tissues within an organism, reveals new insights into the pattern and process by which evolution may alter proximate mechanisms of social priming.

2020年是我国"新三步走"战略中第二步的目标年.不出大的意外事件,"人均GDP在2000年基础上翻两番"的目标可提前实现.真正的经济困难或危机可能发生在2020~2030年间.因此,"全面建设小康社会"最大的挑战,不是人均GDP翻番,而是"各项制度更加完善"形成的可持续发展能力翻番,进而为2020年后跨越"中等收入陷阱"、成功进入现代化国家行列奠定坚实基础.改革开放30年的成功是多种因素共同作用的结果,简而言之,充足廉价的劳动力和广阔的国内市场是最有利的资源禀赋,冷战结束、经济全球化与信息技术革命是天赐良机,增量改革、区域递进、出口导向是成功的路径选择,政府(主要是地方政府)精英化提供了组织与制度方面的基本保障.归根结底,是实行了改革开放.我国确实走过了与众不同的发展道路,但这条道路是一系列"天时、地利、人和"因素偶然相遇的结果,正如所有模式都有其局限性一样,中国以往成功的经验或模式也不可能普遍适用,更不能一成不变地用于自己未来的发展.2020年前,经济规模及市场容量巨大、地区间产业梯次升级空间广阔、储蓄率高、基础设施完善等有利于我国经济发展的因素仍会继续存在,加之"求富裕、谋发展"的强烈意愿不减、体制改革尚未完成,因此,发展能力提升的空间仍然很'^大.但阻碍发展的因素也在累积,人口老龄化的提前到来导致人口红利对经济增长的贡献逐步消失,经济增长的技术支撑脆弱,内需不足,资源约束凸显,环境不堪重负,社会矛盾日趋尖锐,国际关系趋于恶化,这些障碍如果不能成功破解,完全有可能落入"中等收入陷阱",导致经济停滞、倒退和社会动乱.因此,未来十年是我国"全面建设小康社会"的攻坚阶段,是跨越"中等收入陷阱"的起跳阶段,是确立全球性领袖国家地位的力量积蓄阶段,因而在我国现代化进程中,具有承前启后的重要的历史地位.战略总目标是经济发展方式转变取得突破性进展.主要体现为:创新能力明显增强;城市化与工业化发展大体平衡;消费结构升上新的台级;资源与环境约束明显改善.战略实施的重点或基本路径是:(1)经济与社会并重的协调发展战略;(2)创新驱动的产业结构优化升级战略;(3)以消费升级为重点的扩大内需战略;(4)以农民工市民化为突破口的深度城市化战略;(5)破除资源环境约束的可持续发展战略;(6)包容、平衡的经济大国战略.为此,关键领域的改革必须迈出实质性步伐,真正做到"各项制度更加完善":一是推进以放松土地、利率、汇率等生产要素管制为重点的新一轮的市场化改革;二是统筹"国企"改革与社保体系建设;三是推进以重建国家能力为目标的政府改革;四是是以增加居民可支配收入为重点的收入分配改革.
